Whitehaven, Tenn., Residents Oppose Waste Facility Upgrades

Author:Suny Group

Residents in the Whitehaven neighborhood of Memphis, Tenn., are urging city officials to vote against a Waste Connections proposal to revamp its area waste facility center and move its transfer station. Residents voiced concerns over potential noise, odors and even rats coming from the facility, according to Fox 13 Memphis.

Waste Connections of Memphis seeks to redevelop its facility on Brooks Road and increase business operations efficiency. Development plans include adding new office space and a truck maintenance facility, according to the report. The company has also said that during the third phase of the project, it will move its transfer station to Brooks Road, which is farther away from the Whitehaven neighborhood.

Now, the Memphis City Council has placed a 30-day hold on approving the expansion of the transfer station, according to a Local Memphis report. Neighbors claim the area is “already a dump and when Waste Connections located there the facility brought rodents, snakes and terrible stench and they fear those problems will only get worse,” the report notes. Waste Connections says a nearby abandoned apartment complex is to blame for the rodents, according to the report.
