Europe's Steel Output Dipped Marginally

The European crude steel production reported marginal decline in March this year. The domestic production totaled 14.994 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). This is slightly lower by 1.2% when matched with the output of 15.182 Mt achieved by the region in the same month a year before. The cumulative steel output during Jan-Mar ’19 too reported nominal decline by nearly 2.0% over the previous year.

The top five steel producing countries in the region were Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Poland. The combined production by the above five countries totaled 9.566 Mt, accounting for approximately 64% of the total regional output. Germany topped the list, producing 3.675 Mt of steel during the month. The German production dropped marginally by 1.1% over the previous year. Italy too reported marginal decline in steel output during the month. The Italian production totaled 2.277 Mt, down marginally by 0.3% year-on-year. France and Spain reported year-on-year surge in production, whereas Poland’s output dropped.

The EU-28 crude steel production totaled 42.297 Mt until March this year. Over the three-month period, Croatia reported biggest jump in output. The country’s output surged higher by nearly 116% when matched with Jan-Mar ’18. On the other hand, Belgium recorded biggest decline in output, falling by 17.9% year-on-year.
